NDIS Behaviour Support and Therapy Services

Behaviour Support Services

If you have funding under the NDIS for behaviour support TOC can link you with a NDIS registered and experienced behaviour support practitioner. Before beginning services TOC will develop as service agreement in consultation with the participant and/or their representative in line with NDIS guidelines.

A TOC behaviour support providers will work with participants and their supports (e.g., families, caregivers, supports) to provide the services including:

  • A functional behaviour assessment
  • A behaviour support plan
    • There can be two types of behaviour support plans required:
      • Interim behaviour support plan (short-term plan if restrictive practices* to be used while comprehensive plan is being developed)
      • comprehensive behaviour support plan (based on the functional behaviour assessment it aims to understand a participant’s distressed behaviours and communication and develop strategies, skills and interventions focussed in improving the participant’s quality of life.
    • Written in consultation with the participant and caregivers/family and formal and informal supports (where deemed appropriate)
  • Support to put the behaviour support plan into action (including training supports)
  • Ongoing re-evaluation of the plan and  suggested interventions (based on NDIS funding period)

The development and implementation of a support plan is to help participants and those around them understand the participant’s behaviours. It is aimed at developing and teaching more adaptive skills, strategies and interventions to assist the participant to improve their quality of life and meet their NDIS goals.

*Restrictive practices

A behaviour support practitioner can assist in assessing if restrictive practices are being implemented as a strategy to manage a participant’s distress behaviour. Restrictive practices can be implemented to help keep a participant and those around them safe. A behaviour support plan aims to reduce the use of restrictive practices and/or ensure they are a ‘last resort’ option (i.e., while other replacement skills/strategies are being developed/implemented) and used only for the shortest time possible. For further information on restrictive practices please visit: https://ndiscommission.gov.au/sites/default/files/2022-02/regulated-restrictive-practice-guide-rrp-20200.pdf
